Hurricane Update

Fr. Fayant gave us a first hand account of the wide spread devastation the four hurricane’s have caused this year in Seguin.  Through media reports we were aware of the 600 or more people that lost there lives in Haiti during the recent storms.  However, because of poor communications we were not aware of the devastation in Seguin.

Because of all the rain there were many mud slides that caused the following:

  • 16 known deaths of Seguin residents with 30 others missing.  The 30 missing may be visiting relatives or were caught in mud slides.
  • All farm crops in Seguin were destroyed.
  • Many farm animals swept away in the mud slides.
  • Some homes destroyed but those in corn stark homes are now homeless.
  • Top soil has been washed away.
  • All roads to Seguin are washed away so supply trucks with food cannot travel to Seguin.
  • The Seguin school stood strong to the storm with minor damage.

Many people are without food and are forced to walk to Port au Prince or Jacmal for supplies.  It is a 12 hour round trip walk through the mountains to purchase food.  At this time the government will sell seed to the farmers at a reduced rate because 70% of all farm products were destroyed throughout Haiti with all crops being destroyed in Seguin.

Fr. Fayant has made several requests for emergency relief in Seguin.

  • He feels that it may be best to provide money for the people to make the journey to purchase food rather than trying to get food up the mountain.
  • Put windows and doors in the school so the school can be used as an emergency shelter in the future.
  • Finish the church so it can be used as an emergency shelter.
  • Work on a reforestation project to slow the erosion when there are storms.
  • Assist the farmers with seeds to get the new crops in the soil now.  This action will hopefully prevent food shortages next year.

In the ten years of our twinning relationship there have been hurricanes but Seguin has never been hit this hard.  We will continue to discuss these matters with Fr. Fayant during his visit to determine the best way we can assist our Brothers and Sisters in Seguin.

Please keep the people of Seguin and the people of Haiti in your prayers.
